Education Department
Welcome to the Gitlax̱t’aamiks Village Government Education Department. We are dedicated to supporting our citizens through every stage of their academic journey—from the first steps in early childhood to the pursuit of post-secondary excellence. Our mission is to provide the resources, advocacy, and financial guidance necessary for our students to succeed and thrive.
Nursery and Head Start
Our early childhood programs provide a free, community-based learning environment rooted in Nisg̱a’a culture. We focus on play-based learning, language immersion, and land-based teachings to build a strong foundation for our youngest learners.
-
Head Start: For children aged 2–3, focusing on social-emotional development and family connection.
-
Nursery School: A Pre-Kindergarten program (September–June) designed to prepare children for their transition into elementary school.
K-12 Education Support
We work closely with parents, guardians, and students attending Nisg̱a’a Elementary & Secondary School (NESS). Our department acts as a bridge between families and the school district to ensure every student has the tools they need to succeed.
-
Financial Support: Assistance for school supplies and books at the start of the year.
-
Advocacy & Planning: Guidance sessions for secondary students to create essential educational plans for life after graduation.
-
Community Engagement: Information on local events like the Back to School March and Unity Day.
Post-Secondary Funding
We assist Nisg̱a’a citizens in pursuing higher education and trades training through the Nisga’a Post-Secondary Education Assistance Program (NPSEAP). Our Post-Secondary Counsellor provides guidance throughout the application and sponsorship process.
-
Application Deadline: June 15th at 5:00 PM annually.
-
Support Services: Assistance with funding applications, academic planning, and navigating trades-specific requirements.
-
Resource Goal: Helping students find the right avenues to continue their schooling and enter their chosen fields of training.
