Post-Secondary

POST-SECONDARY FUNDING APPLICATION PROCESS:

The Nisga’a Post-Secondary Education Assistance Program Policy was initially developed by the four Village Government Education Administrators, NLG Directorate of Programs and Services and with guidance from the four Village Government Chief Administrative Officers. From time to time, the policy is reviewed to ensure that Nisga’a students are receiving fair and consistant financial assistance under the policy.

Per the policy, please note the following:

The financial assistance granted to a student under The Policy is not intended to cover 100 percent of the costs associated with attending a post-secondary education or training institution. Students are encouraged to apply for other sources of financial assistance that they may be eligible for. The authority of this policy manual derives from Nisga’a legislation; Nisga’a Programs and Services Delivery Act; Section 23 Post-Secondary Education Funding

Nisga’a citizens applying for post-secondary funding are required to complete and submit applications no later than 5:00 PM on June 15TH of each year. (Returning Students are NOT required to complete a Labour Market Research Form)

The Post-Secondary Counsellor ensures that the applications are complete as they are submitted, this allows for students to be contacted and informed of any missing application criteria. Students are notified of applications being received and at that time, they are also requested to submit any missing documents.

The Post-Secondary Counsellor is given two weeks for completion of the initial review before the applications are submitted to the committee for the final review and selection process. Applicants who have submitted incomplete applications will be notified by letter and requested to submit the required documents before the final review takes place. Those who do not meet the second deadline will be notified by letter that their application was not approved for sponsorship, therefore, it is critical that students provide accurate contact information.

Successful applicants will receive a letter via email and Canada Post mail during the first week of July, after all applications have been reviewed.

After sponsorship is granted, please remember to submit receipts by the second Friday of September and Janaury after you have paid for your tuition, books and supplies costs.

Once a student completes their program, s/he is required to submit a copy of the certificate and transcripts to close the education assistance file.

Students are required to maintain direct contact with the Post-Secondary Counsellor, and if unavailable, students may contact the Education Administrator for additional support.
